Serpentine commode in green lacquered wood, chinese decoration, 1950’s

Serpentine commode or chest of drawers in carved and gilt wood with green lacquer, opening with two large drawers in front topped by two smaller ones.
It rests on a carved and gilt wood stand with four console legs ending in a hoof, adorned on uprights with wreaths of wheat ears joining the central element in form of trimming.
On the commode body, green lacquer decoration with Chinese style patterns representing lake scenes with pagodas, foliage, genre scenes and birds.  Upper part adorned with a ledge decorated with a frieze of golden bellflowers.
Six chiseled and gilt bronze handles decorated with putti on each drawer.

English work, realized in the 1950’s.

Many inspirations are visible in this item : the hybrid shape with the taste for serpentine is such as Danish Rococo cabinetmakers from the 18th century loved, like Mathias Ortmann. The green lacquer on a rich carved giltwood stand reminds the practice of lacquer cabinets mounted on other stands, and also the taste for Asia, dear to England.
