Buddha coffee table in black lacquer, glass and gilt brass, 1970’s

Buddha coffee table in black lacquer, glass and gilt brass standing on a black lacquer rectangular base supported by four rectangular foot in gilt brass. On this base stand two “thephanom” statues in black and gilt metal, back to back, kneeling, hands joined in prayer, wearing a wing helmet, jewels, a loincloth and trousers adorned with beads and geometrical motifs. Four legs constituted with two gilt brass bars supported a rectangular tray, smaller than the base, in black colored glass.

The “thephanom” are deities in Thailand, where they are temples guardians. They are often represented in pair, kneeling, hands joined in prayer. These figures arrived in earth during the enlightment of Buddha and became his guardians and religious temples ones.
