Great design classic of the 1950s and popularized in the 1970s, a Papasan armchair, otherwise known as a “bowl armchair” or “moon armchair” is a type of armchair in the shape of a bowl, with an adjustable angle. The bowl sits in a vertical frame traditionally made of rattan, but also sometimes made of wicker or sturdy wood. The chair cushion is usually thick velor filled with cotton down similar to that of a futon. For traditional papasans, the pillow can be removed and used outside of its sturdy frame. The papasan chair gained popularity in the West when American servicemen of World War II brought them back from the Far East, where they had been used especially in Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Japan for centuries.
