Gino Sarfatti (1912-1985) is an Italian designer and industrialist. He is considered to be one of the greatest lighting designers of the 20th century. After studying aerospace engineering at the University of Genoa, he was forced to abandon his studies and work as a glassware salesman in Milan. This is what will give him the taste for lamp design. In 1939, he founded the company Arteluce, specialized in the field of lighting in Milan. Following the Second World War and the bombing of Milan, he fled to Switzerland. He will come back to reorganize Arteluce upon liberation. To wipe out fascism and rebuild Italy, he will join forces with the architects of the rationalist movement. His creations were to be rewarded on multiple occasions, like the 1063 and 1065 models which won the “Grand Prix” of the X Triennale and the 559 model which won the Compasso d’Oro in 1954.
Arteluce is a lighting company created in 1939 by Gino Sarfatti. When Gino Sarfatti is absent for a trip to the United States, he will entrust the artistic direction to Vittorio Vigano. In 1953, following the arrival of Marco Zanuso, Arteluce attracted international attention. At the very beginning of the company, the production was artisanal and the models were sold in very few copies, between 15 and 30 depending on the model. In 1973, Arteluce was bought by Flos, which would reissue the models created by Gino Sarfatti asit’s the case for this chandelier.
