Montis is a Dutch designer furniture manufacturing company established in 1974. It innovates with its avant-garde ideas and techniques by combining leather and metal in different combinations of colors and shapes. Thanks to various collaborations with numerous designers, the brand regularly presents new collections of designer furniture which meet the requirements of quality, comfort and contemporary interior decoration needs.
Gerard van den Berg (1947) is a Dutch designer who paved the way for the revival of Dutch design and its promotion abroad. He apprenticed in his father’s furniture company where he developed his technical skills while training in furniture production at the Rotterdam Technical School. In 1947, he founded Montis with his brother and created simple, practical, timeless furniture, always with a desire for aesthetic research. He often uses leather and tapestry to create a tension between the design and the material that is the basis of the creation. In 1983, he invented the “Jacket” technique: a technique of mounting leather on a metal structure using a zipper. Van den Berg created his eponymous studio in 1989 where he continued designing seats, leaving the Montis company in 1990 and the following year he founded the Label company which creates comfortable and informal furniture. During his career, he received numerous awards such as the Kho Liang Prize in 1984, the Mobilia Innovation Award in 1990, the Interior Architecture Prize the following year and the prize for best Dutch Furniture Design in 1984 and 1997.
