Bellanger, Louis XV style tomb commode, before 1876

Bellanger, stamped.

Tomb Commode in the Louis XV style in walnut, opening with four drawers on three levels.  Bulged shape, chantourné uprights and cut cul de lampe apron, standing on four small curved legs.

Gilt highlights such as acanthus leaves on angles, lingotière or net framing the drawers.

Chiseled and gilt bronze ornamentation on handles and lockers.

Plate with this stamp « Meubles sculptés Bellanger, Fabricant, 61 rue des Sts Pères, PARIS ».

Bellanger S. is identified as a carved furniture fabricant and antiques repairer. He settled at 61 Sts Pères Street, Paris, between 1867 and 1876 and won a medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1867.

The tomb shape of commodes is an innovation appeared mostly during the Regence period at the beginning of the 18^thcentury and the cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulles (father) was certainly the creator or an important contributor of this newness. Cf the pair of tomb shaped commodes delivered to Louis XIV at Trianon, today kept in Versailles.
