Falconet, Menacing Love, Bronze Sculpture, late 19th century

Bronze sculpture after the marble realized by the French sculptor Etienne Maurice Falconet in 1757 for Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV’s mistress, “Menacing Love” or also “Seated Cupid”, in French “L’Amour menaçant”.

A winged angel seated, Cupidon the God of Love, is standing maliciously. His right index is on his mouth, claiming the silence while he is taking an arrow out of its quiver with his other hand. The famous arrow that make fall in love the person it touches!

Original marble commanded by Madame de Pompadour in 1757 for the Hotel d’Evreux gardens, actual Elysée Palace and today kept in the Louvre Museum.

Here, late reproduction in bronze from the late 19^th century, standing on a pinky marble base.

Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716-1791) was an eminent sculptor during the Louis XV reign, very appreciated by Madame de Pompadour and which talent led him to the head of the Sculpture office of the famous Sèvres Porcelain Manufacture in 1757. During 10 years, he popularized the “biscuit” and created numerous sculptures to adorn tables. His international reputation is finally established when he realized (1766-1775) the huge bronze statue of the Russian tsar Peter the Great for Catherine II of Russia.
