Flavio Poli (1900-1980) is passed down to posterity for having given birth to a new style of Murano glass in the 1950s, which is called “Sommerso”, or submerged glass. Submerged glass is a technique that consists of superimposing different layers of glass of various consistencies and colors. His series of Sommerso blown glass pieces received the Compasso d’Oro award in 1954. During his career, he won five Grand Prix at the Milan Triennials. His creations have also been presented at various editions of the Venice Biennale, as well as at the Universal Exhibition in Brussels. Many of Poli’s pieces can be found in museums around the world, including the Murano Glass Museum, Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi in Rome, the National Gallery in Victoria, Australia, and MoMA in New York.
Luigi Mandruzatto was a Murano glass producer of Italian origin, who operated in the twentieth century. He belongs to a family of Murano glass manufacturers active since 1934. His work is characterized in particular by the use of geometric and cubic shapes, for symmetrical and asymmetrical pieces.
