Eugène Paul, known as Gen Paul (1895-1975) was a French painter, draftsman, chisel engraver and expressionist lithographer. Born in Paris, he grew up in Montmartre. His first works are inspired by his friends from Montmartre, such as Maurice de Vlaminck or Maurice Utrillo. But quickly, he was influenced by expressionism and in particular by Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne. His work is also characterized by the influence of Cubists, such as Juan Gris, Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger. Unlike other Expressionists of this time, such as Chaïm Soutine and Georges Rouault, and unlike the German Expressionists, Gen Paul’s works are cheerful and full of optimism, with a prominent presence of color. Through the dynamism and movement present in his paintings, some consider Gen Paul to be the forerunner of the forms of Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s. Gen Paul was marked, during his life, by the loss of a leg during the First World War. In the 1920s, Gen Paul exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne. Another notable fact, the Museum of Modern Art of the city of Paris keeps in its reserves two large paintings from the end of the 1930s.
