Rectangular oil on canvas with a carved gilt and silvered wood frame adorned with acanthus leaves. Its a still life representing colorful bouquet of flowers, essentially roses and eyelets.
The painting is signed bottom right “Godchaux”. Three artists could match with this name, Alfred Godchaux (1835-1895), Emile Godchaux (1860 – ?) et Roger Godchaux (1878-1958). A certain confusion exists about those three painters, who certainly belong to the same family, considering the fact that they have painted the same subjects, like landscapes, still lives and flowers.
The appearance of the signature suggests that these painting was made by Roger Godchaux (1878-1958), also known for his activity of animal sculptor and painter. Student of Adler and Gérôme in Paris, he exposed in the French Artists Salon since 1905 and received a silver medal in 1928. His work is marked par paintings of savages and farm animals inspired by animals from the Jardin des Plantes or a little village of Brie, where his wife’s mom lived. But first of all he was a sculptor who shaped earth by stripping it, smoothing it and by letting appear the texture. His work is closed to Paul Jouve’s one but move away from François Pompon’s one.
Work realized circa 1900.
