Oil on canvas showing an abstract composition in pink, white and grey shades. Visible brushstrokes or knife strokes creating geometrical forms delimited by black shadows.
Signed bottom right “Léon Zack 58”. Framed with bamboo style giltwood.
Léon Zack (1892-1980) is a Russian-born artist, French naturalized. He initially followed a literature training in Moscow and first exposed in 1907 at the
Muscovite Painters Federation Salon. Because of the war, he left Russia and traveled in Europa until his installation in Paris in 1923.
First figurative artist, painting many portraits, Léon Zack progressively slides to expressionism by stylizing figures that he underlines with black strokes, becoming thicker and thicker until he toggles in a geometrical abstraction. Thus, in 1947, he exhibits at the Garets’ gallery a set only composed with abstract paintings. His abstraction still evolves concomitantly with the importance he gives to Philosophy: his artwork became more lyrical and spiritual. He considers the painting as a living organic system, independent, always energetic with colored spots in tension with each other, often in the shape of stars or clouds. He is one of the leaders of the informal abstraction and a great representative of the “nuagiste” trend.
