Fernando Botero (1932-) is a Colombian artist known its sculptures and paintings of characters with larges and curved shapes. After his studies, he went to Europe in 1952 where he studied great painting masters as Velasquez, Goya and Piero della Francesca. He went back to Central America and moved to Mexico at the end of the 1950’s. At this moment he decided to make larger his characters and to not give them any face expression, no matter the expressed subject. He picked up some masters paintings who made him more know as the Joconde of Leonardo da Vinci or the Portraits of Hélène Fourment by Pierre Paul Rubens.
From the 1970’s, he initiated to bronze sculpture to allow his paintings to be extended in three dimensions. His artworks were inspired by ancient Egyptian art or pre-Columbian cultures.
Until today, he received many prizes and realized many exhibitions in the entire world, testimony of his great success, thanks to his unique style.
