The floral painting always had an important place since Antiquity. Those symbolic items have different meanings according to the context or the studied subject. Flowers express abundance and beauty of nature or show the fragility of human existence, the vanity of our ephemeral life on earth.
The French passion for floral compositions appeared in the 17^th century with the emerging passion for gardens, the popularity of flowers botanic studies and exchanges with still-life painters coming from the north of Europe. All along the 18^th century, flowers invaded canvas of Van Spaendonck, Van Daël, Berjon and bouquets are painted despite seasons, only to flatter senses. They gradually lose their symbolic value and became simple items of pleasure.
During the 19^th century, a school specialized in flowers painting appeared at Lyon. Indeed, production of Lyon silks increased, as the request of floral motifs. Moreover, flowers painting became an excuse for only representing pure beauty and also an avant-garde medium for impressionist painters’ formal researches.

These painting is inspired by this early 19^th century manner, still academic, which simply wanted to show the nature beauty thanks to very decorative compositions.
