Painted canvas figuring a side view of a woman portrait in the Renaissance style.
She wears a black dress with a gilt collar, belt with gilt flower motifs, grey sleeves adorned with white floral motifs. The woman is ginger with a shaved forehead like in 15th century trend, popular in the aristocratic class. She wears pulled up hair held by a gilt ribbon.
Grey and gilt tones background with white flowers motifs mixing to the floral motifs of the woman costume.
Linen raw canvas hand-painted with natural pigments and background gilt with copper leaf. Canvas stretched thanks to two wood sticks and the lower one is removable, permitting to roll them for the shipping.
French contemporary work.
At the Renaissance period, wealthy people and nobles ordered their portraits. The tendency at the 14th and 15th centuries, more particularly in Italy, was the side view portrait inspired by Antique medals and coins. Thus, the profile portrait put the accent on the face line and not on a special expression, which could disrupt the spectator: it gave a timeless aspect to the character.
This canvas is inspired by many portraitists of the Renaissance period such as Pisanello, Piero di Cosimo, Antonio Pollaiolo or Leonardo da Vinci.
