Willy Guhl (1915-2004) is a designer of Swiss origin. He is the pioneer of Swiss industrial design. He is part of the current of neo-functionalism. He trained as a cabinetmaker at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, i.e. the School of Applied Arts in Zurich, where he taught from 1941, and became the director of the interior design department in 1951. After the Second World War, he participated in the program of the housing assistance institution established in 1945 to produce simple furniture for the reconstruction of Europe. At the end of the 1940s, he carried out innovative research in the field of plastic furniture. It was on this occasion that he developed a knowledge of molding techniques that will allow him to reveal himself by transposing them onto a new material: Eternit, also called fiber cement. It is a kind of reinforced cement, produced initially for industry. It is an inexpensive material with very high resistance, therefore perfectly suited to the manufacture of outdoor furniture. His most famous pieces are the Loop rocking chair, designed in 1954, and the Diabolo and Mouchoir planters, both designed in 1970.
