Pierre Székely (1923-2001) is a Hungarian painter and sculptor, settled in France after the Second World War. He was married to the painter, ceramist and sculptor Vera Székely. He is the father of designer Martin Szekely. His early works are inspired by Surrealism and are abstract stone sculptures.

Pierre Székely in a few dates:

In 1953: the house called “Le Bateau Ivre”, located in Saint-Marcellin in the department of Isère.

From 1957: sets of sculptures-games in different French cities.

From 1959, numerous sculptures, monumental works and urban developments, in collaboration with architects.

In 1975: the Székely fountain in Caen, in pink granite.

In 1981, a retrospective of his work was held at the Monnaie de Paris.

He was a member of the Espace group founded by André Bloc in 1951 and of the International Group of Prospective Architecture (GIAP) founded by Michel Ragon in 1965

Two open-air museums are entirely devoted to his work: one opened in 1991 in Pécs (Hungary), the other in 1993 in Sekigahara (Japan).

His works are kept in the following museums:

– the museum of the castle of Vascœuil (Eure) exhibits sculptures in the park;

– the Ursuline Museum of Mâcon (Saône-et-Loire) preserves many drawings by Székely;

– the FRAC Centre-Val de Loire in Orléans keeps around ten works in its arts and architecture department
