André Monpoix (1925-1976) is a French interior designer and architect. He belongs to the young generation of decorators of the 1950s. He graduated in 1949 from the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. In 1953, he created his own agency and began a long collaboration with the publisher Meubles TV. Two years later, alongside Alain Richard, they became exclusive designers of the brand, offering furniture with contemporary lines, combining wood with metal. He received the René Gabriel prize in 1962. Among the other notable facts of his career, he also produced furniture for Artifort and Huchers Minvielle; he was awarded a gold medal from the Society for the Encouragement of Art and Industry, an honorary diploma at the Triennale in Milan, a Grand Prix d’honneur at the International Exhibition in Brussels in 1958. He notably participated in the renovation of the private apartments of the Elysée Palace, with Pierre Paulin, during the presidency of Georges Pompidoux.
The René Gabriel Prize is a tribute paid to René Gabriel (1890-1950). It is a prize that was awarded from 1950 to 1990, almost every year, the first designer to have received it being Marcel Gascoin and the last Olivier Mourgue. Among these winners are the most famous René-Jean Caillette, Joseph André Motte, Pierre Paulin or Michel Ducaroy, Michel Cadestin. This award has long been considered one of the most prestigious awards in the field of furniture design. It is the French equivalent of the Compasso d’Oro prize. The Creator of the Year prize at the Furniture Fair succeeded the René Gabriel prize and is still awarded today.
