Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988) was a Swedish designer formed in the woodworking workshop of his father. He created furniture for the family company from 1933. In 1936, Mathsson was the subject to a retrospective at the Rösshka museum of Göteborg and in 1937 he participated to the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Modern Life in Paris. From 1945 to 1957, he mainly devoted himself to architecture by creating simple structures in glass, wood and concrete for residences and schools. In 1957, he took over the leadership of the family company and from 1958, he created furniture in collaboration with the mathematician Piet Hein. Widely recognized for his work of designer, he received the Gregor Paulsson medal in Stockholm in 1955 and his furniture was exhibited in Stockholm, Oslo, Dresde and New York.
He promoted soft organic and curved shapes, fit to users’ morphology. Mathsson designed his furniture to being as ergonomic as possible by perfectly moulding human body shapes. All along his career, he developed two tendencies for his furniture: the pure aesthetic form and humanist values.
