Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was a Danish architect and designer. Holding the functionalist current, he advocates, like Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, a rational and functional architecture. The design invented by Arne Jacobsen laid the foundations of organic modernism. He was quickly nicknamed the “Danish Le Corbusier”. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, his most famous achievements are the Ant (Ant) Chair, Model 3100 from 1952, Series 7 which was marketed in 1955, the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (built between 1958 and 1960), the Egg Swan (Swan) Armchair and Gryden Armchair and Sofa (later renamed The Pot), in 1958. Jacobsen’s influence is notable in design: the cutlery used in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 film A Space Odyssey (1968) is directly inspired by Jacobsen’s designs. In 1956, he became a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. More than 30 years after his death, Danish design still remains marked by his imprint.
Fritz Hansen, sometimes called Republic of Fritz Hansen (since 2000s) is a Danish furniture publishing house. Founded in the middle of the 19th century, Fritz Hansen enjoyed great notoriety during the postwar period. The company’s specialty is molded and bent plywood. From the interwar period, Fritz Hansen collaborated with the designer Hans Wegner. The editor is particularly associated with the architect and designer Arne Jacobsen; their collaboration began in 1934. Fritz Hansen edited big names in Design: Eero Saarinen, Poul Kjærholm, Verner Panton and his Bachelor chair. Clean lines, minimalist furniture, recurring presence of wood and functionality are the brand’s guidelines. Function and strength take precedence over appearance when it comes to Scandinavian Design. With humor, the general manager of the publishing house points out that the “furniture is expensive but it does not show”.
