Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779) was an English cabinetmaker who created furniture inspired from the French rocaille style, the Gothic ornaments and architectures and the Chinese style ornaments. He used solid mahogany and the furniture are sometines vennered with rosewood, varnished or covered by an lacquer imitation. The ornamental sculpture on his furniture is noticeable by its precision. All Chippendale’s creations had a long influence on the whole furniture creation, especially the English one, and was reinterpreted many times.
Chippendale seatings are recognizable thanks to their rectangular fiddle back with fiddle stiles and a central splat adorned with Gothic, Chinese or rocaille inspirations motifs. The legs are often cabriole or a straight form, ending in claw and ball.
