A torchiere is a slender support, a candelabra carried on a rod or a wall lamp, which itself supports sources of light such as torches, candelabra, etc. This kind of big light rests on the ground or on the floor. The torchieres first took the form of large-sized lampposts ending at the top with a disc, a container in which the light, wax or oil, was placed. Later, it was made the support of a kind of chandelier and it was given appropriate forms. It is most often, on a fairly high pedestal, some statue or allegorical figure holding in the hand, which she raises, a beam which expands into branches of light like candles, oil or gas. The 18th century torchiere is in fact the version of a single body of the pedestal table on which rests a girandole. The torchiere is also said of an open metal vase provided with a handle, and in which one places combustible materials intended to give light by intense flames.
